Great workhorse professional writer at a great value. This writer has been the old standby machine for many professional court reporters.  It can be a great student writer because it allows the student to start on a professional writer without having to upgrade.  It's also a great writer for a working reporter because it's such a workhorse, writes to a disk and will do realtime directly to any CAT system.

 

The Smartwriter® is an electronic machine featuring a built-in disk drive that writes notes directly to a diskette.  Each diskette can store up to six full steno pads, giving you plenty of capacity.  Pop your diskette into your CAT system and your ready to translate.  The Smartwriter features the unique steno-mark capability, which marks the tape and disk at key points you designate for easy recall later.  This feature is useful for locating proper names, highlighting technical terms, indicating direct or cross examination, or pinpointing words that need later verification.

 

There is a small LCD display that communicates with you, telling you such things as the amount of disk space you have available, the job name, disk formating instructions, low battery detection, and other helpful information.

 

The Smartwriter™ also has a number of safety features.  Should you lose power or accidentally shut the machine off, it's battery backup automatically saves all the notes to disk avoiding any lose of important information.  The writer can also be turned into a manual writer if you have no power.

 

This writer uses off the shelf batteries that are easy to replace. Other key features include depth and paper spacing controls, and an electrically powered platen.  It has a continuous loop ink ribbon, and comes equipped with a static dissipator that drains static charge off the paper tape.  The Smartwriter comes with a serial realtime connection that will interface with any CAT system.
